Virtual Worlds are Useful for Children ( 4 posts )

A research report says that virtual worlds can be important places where children practice what they will do in real life. They are also a powerful and attractive alternative to more passive adventures like watching TV. The research was done with children using the BBC’s Adventure Rock virtual world, aimed at those aged 6-12. It surveyed and interviewed children who were the first to test the game.

The online world is a theme island built for the BBC’s children channel by Belgian game maker Larian. Children explore the world alone but they use message boards to share what they find and what they do in the different creative studios they find around the virtual space.

At times children were explorers and at others they were social climbers eager to connect with other players. Some were power users looking for more information about how the virtual space really worked. The children could try all kinds of things without having to be afraid of the consequences that would follow if they tried them in the real world. They learned many useful social skills and played around with their identity in ways that would be much more difficult in real life. According to the study what children liked about virtual worlds was the chance to create content such as music, cartoons and videos.

The publishers of the report say that virtual worlds can be a powerful, engaging and real interactive alternative to more passive media. They urged creators of virtual spaces for children to get young people involved very early on because they really do have good ideas to add and they are very good critical friends.

5W + 1H, Yes/No Question and Tag Questions

1. 5W + 1H    : An Effective Approach to Collecting and Presenting Key

A. Information
One of the most universally used tools for information gathering, analysis, organization and presentation is the 5W1H framework. This method is used across a range of professions, from process analysts to quality engineers to journalists, to understand and explain virtually any problem or issue. The same method can be used to organize the writing of reports, articles, white papers, and even whole books.

B. The Basic Approach
This approach seeks to answer six basic questions in gathering information about nearly any subject: Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How. Sometimes, depending on the context, a second “H” might be used: How Much. In journalism, news story writing requires that the questions to be answered take a basic form:
1. Who is it about?
2. What is it about?
3. When did it happen?
4. Where did it happen?
5. Why did it happen?
6. How did it happen?
Applying the 5W1H framework to other types of writing or investigation takes some interpretation. The order in which the answers to the questions is presented may vary, but the “what” is usually addressed first.
What
In journalism, the “what” identifies an event and is often stated in the “lead (or lede),” the first paragraph of a news story. The “what” is the primary subject, the reason the information is being gathered and presented. Apart from journalism, it may be stated in a title and in a purpose statement. The “what” may need to be defined, a process that may comprise the remainder of a document. Example :    What, specifically,…?
Who
A news story identifies who an event involves. The “who” may be part of the lede, and could be the reason the story is news worthy. In other contexts, the “who” identifies the persons or groups the “what” concerns. It might describe the audience of a document, or those who are affected by a policy, process or procedure. Example :    Who benefits?
When
A key part of a news story is describing when an event happened. Answering the “when” indicates any time sensitivity related to the “what.” It may be part of an instruction regarding the proper point at which a action should be taken. Sometimes it may be part of an “If…then” scenario of conditional action. Example :    When will it start/end?
Where
A news story reports the location at which an event took place. The “where” describes a geographical or physical location of importance to the “what.” At times, the where may be less important than other factors. Example :    Where are you?
Why
The “why” is usually the most neglected of the questions in the framework. News stories often lack information from authoritative sources to explain the “why.” In other contexts, the “why” may be considered irrelevant, particularly when describing a policy or procedure decreed by an organizational authority. Efforts to ascertain and explain the “why” may help those affected be more accepting of any change the “what” requires. Example :    Why does that happen?
How
For journalists, determining how an event took place may be nearly as challenging as explaining the “why,” although more effort is usually put to satisfying the question. When describing policies, processes or procedures, the how may be the most important part of the effort. A considerable appetite for understanding how to do something can be found across audiences. Sometimes effort focuses on the “what” when more work should be devoted to explaining the “how.” Example :    How much?
Conclusion:
The 5W1H framework can be applied to any topic at any level of granularity to gather, analyze and present information from the simplest to the most complex. Attributed to a Rudyard Kipling poem, 5W1H is the place to start and may be enough to take you to the finish.

2. Yes/No Question
Definition:    An interrogative construction that expects an answer of “yes” or “no.” Contrast  with wh- question.
Examples and Observations:
Homer: Are you an angel?
Moe    : Yes, Homer. All us angels wear Farrah slacks.
(The Simpsons)
“Directing a movie is a very overrated job, we all know it. You just have to say ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ What else do you do? Nothing. ‘Maestro, should this be red?’ Yes. ‘Green?’ No. ‘More extras?’ Yes. ‘More lipstick?’ No. Yes. No. Yes. No. That’s directing.” (Judi Dench as Liliane La Fleur in Nine, 2009).
Principal McGee: Are you just going to stand there all day?
Sonny: No ma’am. I mean, yes ma’am. I mean, no ma’am.
Principal McGee: Well, which is it?
Sonny: Um, no ma’am.
(Eve Arden and Michael Tucci in Grease, 1978)
The yes-no question is found in three varieties: the inverted question, the typical exemplar of this kind; the inverted question offering an alternative (which may require more than a simple yes or no for an answer); and the tag question:
Are you going? (inversion)
Are you staying or going? (inversion with alternative)
You’re going, aren’t you? (tag)

3. Tag Questions
in a tag question, the speaker makes a statement, but is not completely certain of the truth, so he or she uses a tag question to verify the previous statement. Sentences using tag questions should have the main clause separated from the tag by a comma. The sentence will always end a question mark.Example:
1. There are only twenty-eight days in February, aren’t there?
2. It’s raining now, isn’t it?
3. The boys don’t have class tomorrow, do they?
4. You and i talked with the professor yesterday, didn’t we?
5. Jill and Joe have been to Mexico, haven’t they?

Bahasa Inggris Bisnis 2 (Tugas 1)

 I.          Subject, Verb, Complement, Modifier (Definition and Example)

1. Subject
The subject is the agent of the sentence in the active voice; it is the person or thing that performs or is responsible for the action of the sentence and it normally precedes the verb.

2. Verb
The verb follows the subject in a declarative sentence; it generally shows the action of the sentence.

3. Complement
A complement completes the verb. It is similar to the subject because it is usually a noun or noun phrase; however, it generally follows the verb when the sentence is in the active voice.

4. Modifier
A modifier tells the time, place or manner of the action. Very often it is a prepositional phrase. A prepositional phrase is a group of words that begins with a preposition and ends with a noun.

Example:

A. Henry and Marcia have visited the president in his house.
(Henry and Marcia = Subject | have visited = verb phrase | the president = complement | in his house = modifier of place)
B. We can eat lunch in this restaurant today.
(We = Subject | can eat  = verb phrase | lunch = complement | in this restaurant = modifier of place | today = modifier of time)
C. She opened a checking account at the bank last week.
(She = Subject | opened = verb | a checking account = complement | at the bank = modifier of place | last week = modifier of time)
D. Jill is buying a new hat in the store.
(Jill = Subject | is buying = verb phrase | a new hat = complement | in the store = modifier of place)
E. George is cooking dinner tonight.
(George = Subject | is cooking = verb phrase | dinner = complement | tonight = modifier of time)

II.                II.         PRONOUNS

There are five forms of pronouns in english; subject pronouns, complement pronouns (object pronouns), possessive pronouns, possessive adjectives and reflexive pronouns.

1. Subject Pronouns
Subject pronouns occur in the subject position of a sentence or after the verb be.
Verbs: I, you, he, she, it, they, weExample: I am going to the store

2. Complement Pronouns
Complement pronouns occur in complement position, whether they complement a verb or a preposition.
Verbs: me, you, him, her, it, us, you, them
Example: They called us on the telephone.

3. Possessive Adjectives
Possessive adjectives are not the same as possessive pronouns. These simply modify, rather than replace, nouns; possessive pronouns replace nouns. Possessive forms indicate ownership.
Verbs: my, your, his, her, its, our, your, their
Example: John is eating his dinner.

4. Possessive Pronouns
These pronouns cannot precede a noun. They are pronouns and thus replace the noun. The noun is understood from the context and is not repeated.
NOTE:
mine = my + noun; for example, my book.
yours = your + noun; for example, your pen.
hers = her + noun; for example, her car.
Verbs: mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours, yours, theirs.
Example: This is my book = This is mine

5. Reflexive Pronouns
These pronouns usually follow the verb and indicate that the subject is both giving and receiving the action.
Verbs: myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves.
Example: John bought him a new car = John bought himself a new car.

A Farmer and His Three Sons

A farmer had three sons. They were strong and young but never agreed with one another. They often quarreled among themselves. The farmer had given them a lot of advice. But they always turned a deaf ear. They disliked advice. The farmer felt very sad about it.
The farmer thought a lot and then he thought up a good plan. He called his sons and ordered them, 'Bring me a few sticks." The farmer tied the sticks into a bundle.
"Each of you, break this bundle of sticks said!" said the farmer. They did so, but they could not break it. Then, the farmer untied the sticks and gave each of his sons a stick. Each of them broke the stick easily in the twinkling of an eye.
"There you are, my sons!", shouted the farmer. "If you remain united, you are strong. But if you quarrel with one another, you will be broken one by one easily. Do you understand what I mean?"
At last, the advice worked out. They lived in harmony and united ever after. The farmer felt relieved. "Now I can die peacefully," he whispered.

BODY LANGUAGE

Body language is an important part of every language. This body language, however, is interpreted differently from culture to culture.

Laughing
An American-style smile, for example, is big and friendly. Americans are never afraid of showing their teeth. They don't cover their smile with their hands because they think that such a gesture is a silly thing to do. In fact, putting the hand in front of the mouth when laughing is considered impolite. It means that you are making fun of the other person.

Eye contact
When speaking, Americans do not close their eyes. This eye contact is very important in the U.S. They believe that 'honest people look at you directly, dishonest people look to the side, and embarrassed people look down.' If you close your eyes while talking with them, they will think you either bored or asleep.

Should Ads be Banned from TV Program?

I am writing to complain about ads on TV. There are so many ads, especially during my favorite program. I think they should be stopped for a number of reasons.
First, ads are a nuisance. There go on for a long time and there are so many. Sometime duration for ads is evenlonger than the program itself.
Second, ads give a bad influence on people. They try to encourage people to buy unhealthy food like beers, soft drinks, candies, and chips. In other words, they make people want things they do not really need and cannot afford.
Finally, ads play role in what programs people watch. That is because there are lots of ads in popular programs that a lot of people watch. Some programs which are not so popular get stopped because they do not attract enough ads, even though those programs may be someone’s favorite.
For those reasons, I think TV stations should stop showing ads. They interrupt programs. They are a bad influence on people and they sometimes put a stop to people’s favorite shows. I am sick of ads and now I mostly watch movie in cinema.

Tips Belajar Tata Bahasa Inggris

"At least one policeman was injured in the explosion which happened when security forces were patrolling in the port city of Trincomalee"

Dari kalimat di atas kita dapat belajar
  • bahwa penulisan yang benar adalah patrolling (dengan 2 L) dan bukan patroling (dengan 1 L)
  • TIDAK dikatakan "which was happening when security forces were patrolling" karena alasan tertentu
  • dituliskan "one policeman" dan bukan "1 policeman" karena alasan tertentu
  • alih-alih hanya dituliskan "in Trincomalee", di situ ditambahkan informasi dengan mengatakan "in the port city of Trincomalee". Dengan demikian kita juga dapat menggunakan struktur yang sama untuk tujuan yang lain, misal "I studied in the small town of Magelang" sebagai pengganti "I studied in Magelang, which is a small town" yang lazim kita gunakan.
Misal: I want to sit on that chair; On that chair I want to sit. Ini mirip penggunaan bahasa Indonesia oleh para serdadu Belanda jaman perang dahulu (Saya mau duduk di situ; Di situ saya mau duduk; Mau duduk di situ saya; Duduk di situ saya mau).

Penekanan pada 'kata kunci' (keywords) juga jadi trik utama dalam upaya mendengarkan percakapan dalam bahasa Inggris (listening). I want to sit on that chair. Perhatikan kata I, sit, chair.

Legend of Mount Bromo

Long long time ago there lived a couple in the village near the top of mount Bromo. Joko Seger is his name. He lived peacefully with his wife Roro Anteng. But they were not happy because after some time they did not have any children. Then Joko Seger meditated in mount Bromo asking for god to give them children.

Some times later Joko Seger had a dream. In his dream he was told that he would have descendants but on one condition. The god asked him to sacrifice his children to the crater of mount Bromo. If he refused to sacrifice, then the god will be angry. Without thinking twice Joko Seger agreed to the condition.

After that every year Roro Anteng gave birth to twenty five children. They were very happy and they loved their children so much that they were reluctant to sacrifice them to the crater. They did not give anything to the crater. Then something happened.

One day there was a big eruption of mount Bromo. Smoke, fire, hot cloud of ash came out of its crater. The earth was trembling. The sky was dark. Animals ran away from the mountain. People were very scared since some of them became victims of the hot cloud.

Joko Seger and Roro Anteng remembered their promise to god. He realized that god was very angry. So he decided to sacrifice one of his sons. Then he went to the crater with his youngest son Kusuma. Because Joko Seger did not really want to sacrifice his son to the crater, he tried to hide him. But suddenly an eruption began and made Kusuma fall. Afterwards, Kusuma, who had fell to the crater, gave a voice, "I have to be sacrificed by my parents so that you will all stay alive. From now on, you should arrange an annual offering ceremony on the 14th of Kesodo (the twelfth month of Tenggerese calender.)"

Since then on Joko Seger and Roro Anteng gave offerings to the crater. Every year on the 14th day of the month of Kesada the people of Tengger held a ceremony to give offerings.
